Access to the Entry Door or Entry Gate

For a Class 2 multi dwelling development, we are often asked by architects on whether the standards require access to the following:

  1. The entry gate of the dwelling and not the entry door to the dwelling; or

  2. The entry door of the dwelling which includes the entry gate.

Generally we recommend access is provided to the entry door of the dwelling which includes the entry gate. This ensures step free access is provided for a person with a disability, elderly person, mother with a pram, young kids, visitors etc.

Access to the entry gate and not the entry door of the dwelling does not meet the requirements of s23 of the DDA Act as noted in the Premises Standards Guideline. The guidelines states ”The Commission considers the second interpretation generally consistent with the intent to broaden the choice of accommodation options available to people with disability by providing the opportunity for a person with disability to visit, purchase or rent a unit”.

This can sometimes also be complicated where the development requires adaptable or livable housing as part of the local councils DCP requirements. If this is the case, then access must be provided to the entry door of the dwelling which includes the entry gate as a point of consistency.
